Alewijnse Marine has reached agreement on the restart of the complete electrical installation works on board a trailing suction hopper dredger (TSHD), currently under construction at Barkmeijer Shipyards in the Netherlands.

“A new customer was found after the take-over of the insolvent Barkmeijer by Thecla Bodewes Shipyards. Works in Harlingen are now in full swing with delivery scheduled for March 2020,” said Alewijnse in its latest release.

Under the agreement, Alewijnse will be responsible for the design, building, installation and commissioning of the switchboards and consoles on board the dredger, the dedicated alarm, monitoring and control systems.

Commenting the latest news, Martin Terpstra, Operational Manager at Alewijnse Marine, said: “We are very happy that Thecla Bodewes Shipyards has given us the opportunity to complete this dredger and has indicated that they will retain us for the second vessel that will follow this one. We look forward to demonstrating our electrical and automation expertise on this project and to delivering a state-of-the-art vessel to its new owner.”

“This is the first time that we have worked with them. This project also has major significance for the shipbuilding industry in the Northern Netherlands, including maintaining employment and continuity for the suppliers.”

The TSHD is one of two dredgers that was taken over by Thecla Bodewes Shipyards following the insolvency of Barkmeijer Shipyards.

The new customer will use the specialized dredging vessels for the offshore extraction of sand and gravel aggregates. The dredgers are 105.9 meters long, have a beam of 15.85m and a maximum draught of 6.94m. Each has a single suction pipe and a hopper capacity of 3,000m³, and accommodation for fourteen people.

The advanced dredgers will have diesel-electric power plants to significantly reduce energy consumption and emissions.
